The difficulty of defining anemia by haemoglobin concentration level arises from the continuous nature of the underlying distribution. Elwood's view that 7-8 gms/100 ml is a resonable criterion level accords with the data provided from a limited survey in the lower Ramu area. In the same area, there has been a decline in prevalence of clinical anaemia 1962-72 attributed to increased usage of treatment facilities.
