250 women aged 10-20 years were randomly recruited from villages in the Hisar district, Haryana. Information regarding age, income, and menstruation was collected by interviews. Dietary intake was assessed using a one day 24-h food recall method. Haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations were measured in blood samples taken at the same time of day for all subjects. Hb concentration decreased with increasing age. 76% of women had anaemia (Hb<10 g/dl). A positive relationship between Hb concentrations and socioeconomic status was observed. Hb concentrations were greatest at menarche and pre-menarche ages. No significant differences were found for the prevalence of anaemia amongst vegetarian and non-vegetarian women. Hb concentrations were positively and significantly correlated with daily intakes of Fe, folic acid and protein.
