Free proline and free hydroxyproline were estimated in serum from 60 patients with liver cirrhosis and 11 with chronic active liver disease, and 62 controls. Of the patients with cirrhosis 45 were alcoholics and 9 of them were studied during an episode of alcoholic hepatitis. The controls were 24 healthy persons, 19 with primary malnutrition and 19 severely ill with no liver disorder. Values in normal persons were constant with no difference related to sex or age. In malnourished and severely ill patients values for proline were always low. Patients with nonalcoholic cirrhosis or chronic active liver disease had normal proline and hydroxyproline but in alcoholic liver cirrhosis values were significantly higher than normal; free proline was significantly higher in those with alcoholic hepatitis than in the others.
