Toxicology of the repellent N,N-diethylamide phenoxyacetic acid (P-203) and its mixtures with dimethylphthalate

Despite the absence of allergenic properties of N,N-diethylamide phenoxyacetic acid (P-203), its low oral toxicity and low local irritating properties, in long-term repeated applications to the skin of animals [mice, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs] in doses of 125 and 1250 mg/kg in combination with dimethylphthalate [DMP] 1250 and 625 mg/kg) and alone (1250 mg/kg) it produced a general toxic effect manifested in weight retardation, changes in the blood, protein composition, increased bilirubin concentration and dystrophic and circulatory changes in the liver and other organs. P-203 must not be used in 50% concentration, particularly with DMP. It is necessary to develop compositions with a P-203 concentration not greater than 20-30% and with considerably less or no DMP.
