Male Wistar rats weighing 150 to 200 g were starved for 48 h, then given nicotinamide 50 mg/100 g bodyweight intraperitoneally. Xanthine dehydrogenase activity was estimated in serum incubated with hypoxanthine or NADH 2 h after nicotinamide was given. For normal rats, rats starved for 48 h and rats starved for 48 h and given nicotinamide values with hypoxanthine were 23.2, 20.8 and 31.1 mu g/ml serum 30 min, respectively, and with NADH 110, 100 and 130 mu g iodonitro tetrazolium chloride reduced/ml serum 30 min. Activity returned to normal after 3 h.
