The scope of this presentation will be limited to a discussion of the techniques used in the design of dust control ventilation systems for granular solid materials handling operations such as belt-to-belt transfer, screening, crushing, etc. These techniques find application primarily in surface operations associated with mining, although the same methods can be used in many other applications, as, for example, in sinter plant ventilation design, stockhouse ventilation design, and many others. It will be our purpose to review existing methods for estimating exhaust volumes and to illustrate a comparatively new method that we have been using with some success in the design of dust control facilities at some of Bethlehem Steel Company's newer operations. It is not our purpose to discuss incidentals in design such as hood shape, materials of construction, transport velocity, etc. Such information is adequately presented in several sources.
