Electron microscopy of the pineal glands of chicks 2-5 days old revealed two distinct areas: the follicles formed of A and D cells, and the parafollicular zone surrounding and separating the follicles from the connective tissue walls. The parafollicular zone is basically formed of two types of cells and nerve fibres. The transformation of the parafollicular zone into follicles is suggested.
