Occurrence of Trombicula (Eutrombicula) batatas (L.) in Gallus gallus domesticus L. in the State of Rio de Janeiro (Acarina, Trombiculidae)

The occurrence of Trombicula batatas (L.) on four-week-old chicks of domestic fowls on free range in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1971 is recorded. The usual sites of attachment were the cloacal region, the inner surface of the wings, the neck and the inside of the ear canal. The only noticeable effect of the infestation was intense itching. This is thought to be the first record of this mite from domestic fowls in Brazil where it is known to have occurred in other states on four other hosts including man and turkey.
