Using Falconer's procedure, the heritability of liability to indirect inguinal hernia was estimated as 64 .+-. 3% from the regression coefficients of parents on probands, and as 81 .+-. 7% from the regression coefficients of siblings on probands. Because of intra-uterine environmental causes commonly shared by full sibs as well as the possible component of non-additive genetic variance, the latter estimate is to be regarded as too high, and the 64% probably gives a closer estimate for the heritability for indirect inguinal hernia.
