Fresh fertile hen's eggs were maintained at 37 deg C for 1 day and then cycloheximide 0.8 or 1.0 mu g was injected. On days 2 and 3 of incubation development of treated embryos was retarded and heart rate was slower than in untreated controls. Growth of treated embryos was retarded throughout 17 days of incubation as estimated by size and DNA contents. As estimated by the activities of different enzymes/unit DNA, cells of treated embryos were the same as normal ones of the same age. Female Wistar rats 16 months old which had been on a stock diet containing 23.4% protein were given diets with 24, 12, 8 or 4% protein throughout the rest of their life span. There was no difference in bodyweight between the groups except that those on 4% protein weighed less than the others. The 4 groups of rats survived 29.5, 37.0, 30.0 and 31.6 weeks, respectively; the difference between rats given 24% and those given 12% protein was significant.
