A bacteria-free culture of Calothrix sp. was obtained by subjecting the alga to UV irradiation followed by treatment with polymyxin B sulphate. The pure alga was capable of assimilating atmospheric nitrogen. This process was markedly affected by the composition of the medium. Vigorous growth and good nitrogen yields were recorded on the 25th day of incubation. Chemical analysis of culture filtrates revealed the presence of some amino acids, organic acids and an auxin-like substance, indole acetonitrile. Traces of indole-acetic acid and indolepropionic acid were detected in the algal cells.
