Ectoparasites of the dog (Canis familiaris L.) in Gdańsk

Of 418 stray dogs examined in Gdansk, Poland, about 49% were infested with ecotoparasites. Linognathus setosus (Olf.) was found on 14% Ctenocephalides canis (Curt.) on 40% and Pulex irritans L. on 22%. Small numbers of Trichodectes canis (Deg.), C. felis (Bch.) and Ixodes ricinus (L.) were also observed. The seasonal fluctuation of infestation over the year was observed for the 3 most numerous species. Observations were conducted in respect of the distribution of parasites on the host's body, the relationship between the parasite load and length of hair, composition of parasite population and co-parasitism of different species on the same host.
