As a follow-on to his paper 'Large-scale management systems and parasite populations: ectoparasites' published in Veterinary Parasitology, 11: 61-68 (1982), the author reviews the advances in and present state of chemical control of ectoparasites in herds of cattle, sheep, pigs and camels. The economic reasons for ectoparasite control are discussed briefly, as is the possible impact of advances in knowledge of host resistance and biological control.
