Primary school children in rural Punjab: nutritional and anthropometric profile

Data from 3296 children were representative of the nutritional and anthropometric status of two-thirds of Punjab rural primary school children. Average bodyweight was 72 and height 91% of the Harvard Standard; mid-arm circumference was 79 and 84% of the Wolanski Standard for boys and girls. The Punjabi children were heavier and taller than children in other Indian regions but were lighter and shorter than Indian public school children. The incidence of deficiencies found was protein-energy malnutrition 12.9, anaemia 12.4, goite 1.8 and possible fluorosis 36.8%.
