The attitude to breast feeding by 345 maternity patients was assessed by questionnaire survey. Among the findings was that 80% of women thought that breast feeding would enhance the relationship between mother and infant. This attitude was more pronounced among women aged 20-30 yr than in those aged <20 yr and also more pronounced among highly intelligent than less intelligent women. The less women knew about breast feeding, the less did they expect breast feeding to be of importance in the relationship between mother and child.
