Residues of polychlorinated biphenyls in human milk

Polychlorinated biphenyls were determined by GLC in the milks of 104 puerperae obtained as described in the preceding abstr. 38 of the women lived in the country, and 66 lived in towns. The mean value with SEM was 0.334 plus or minus 0.015 ppm in milk fat. A value quoted for comparison for 25 samples of bulk cows' milk from 5 collecting centres in each of Bialystok, Kielce, Lublin, Rzeszow and Warsaw provinces ( more than or equal to 100 cows/sample) obtained in May 1974 was 0.113 plus or minus 0.014 ppm (difference between human and cows' milk significant at P<0.001). No significant differences were found between contents in milks of town and country women, or between milks of women of different ages.
