Chronic viral infection in rheumatism and systemic lupus erythematosus

Review of clinico-virological, immunological, cytogenetic and experimental tests with humans, mice and Aleutian mink indicated the existance of major pathogenetic elements of chronic viral infections including prolonged viral persistence, damage to hemopoietic and lymphoid organs, decrease in cell immunity factors with developing imcomplete viral tolerance and formation of immune complexes. More detailed studies of viral reactions should reveal the genesis of rheumatism and systemic lupus erythematosus and lead to more rational treatment which includes agents inhibiting viral activity, interferon inducing agents and correction of disturbed immunological homeostatis.
