Clinical trials are reported on the psychotrophic drug Dogmatil (sulpiride) and its effects on lactogenesis, particularly in women with breast-feeding problems. 200 mg Dogmatil were given intramuscularly to 250 women immediately after parturition, and were followed by daily oral doses of 200-300 mg Dogmatil. With the exception of 3% of patients with agalactia, all the women receiving Dogmatil breast fed their babies for at least 3 wk. No secondary effects of the drug, either on the mother or the infant, were observed. Analysis of milk samples taken from Dogmatil-treated women indicated that it contained more fat and sugar and less protein than milk from control women. These differences had no significant effect on the health of the infants. It is concluded that Dogmatil has a beneficial effect on lactogenesis in women.
