Eleven male subjects aged between 25 and 45 years were given 4 g ascorbic acid by mouth daily for 3 weeks without dietary restriction; the dose was well tolerated and no side effects were apparent. The high level of vitamin C in plasma was accompanied by increases in plasma carotene and increased basal activity of transketolase in erythrocytes; the activation coefficient of erythrocyte transaminase was increased but the basal activity decreased. Ascorbic acid administration had no effect on the activation coefficient of erythrocyte glutathione reductase or on plasma vitamins A and E.
