Ten cows were successively anaesthetized with intravenous ketamine for major and minor surgery; 2 mg/kg body weight was given by rapid i/v injection for induction, while a drip infusion of physiological saline solution of ketamine containing 2 mg/ml was used for maintenance at a rate of 10 ml/minute. Neither regurgitation, rumen inflation nor salivation occurred. All the animals were on their feet 30 minutes after stopping the drip infusion.
