Sodium and chloride transport across the equine cecal mucosa

Mature Shetland ponies eating a commercial hay and grain feed were killed and samples of caecal mucosa were removed. Both surfaces were bathed in Ringer's solutions of varying ionic content and measurements were made of electric potential across the sample and, with this potential short-circuited, of Na and Cl transport with 2 radioactive tracers for each element. Active transport of Na from lumen to blood and Cl from blood to lumen was consistent with the measured short-circuit current when both ions were present, even when bicarbonate was absent. Replacement of Cl by acetate inhibited Na transport and replacement of Na by choline inhibited Cl transport, and short-circuit current was not consistent with Na and Cl flux. It was suggested that Na, Cl and other ions may be actively transported in both directions.
