The prevalence of mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and its association with house dust allergy

Investigations in 1970-72 on the prevalence of mites in house dust in the Delhi area of India and their association with house-dust allergy showed that Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trt.), occasionally with D. farinae Hughes also, was present in 27 of 51 houses of subjects sensitive to house dust from which samples were taken. Skin tests on the people concerned with extract of D. farinae had given positive results. It is thought that mites of the genus Dermatophagoides may play a significant part in the etiology of bronchial asthma in India.
