Effect of L-dopa on galactopoiesis and gonadotropin levels in the inappropriate lactation syndrome

10 patients with inappropriate lactation, associated with amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea but with a normal sella turcica, were given L-DOPA orally (0.5-3.5 g/day). In 4 of 7 subjects, galactorrhoea was suppressed by chronic ingestion of L-DOPA but lactation resumed on cessation of treatment. One patient had permanent inhibition of lactation and the remaining 2 patients had only partial suppression during treatment. Normal ovulatory cycles occurred in 6 patients during therapy and 2 of these became pregnant. The data suggest L-DOPA may be effective in treating abnormal lactation and anovulation due to hypothalamic disturbance.
