Occurrence of Klebsiella in the genitalia and fetuses of thoroughbred horses

Klebsiella was not isolated from genital secretions and aborted foetuses of German Thoroughbreds before 1968, but has been isolated with increasing frequency since that year. Some animals, particularly stallions, have yielded Klebsiella for years, in spite of treatment with specific antibiotics. Six strains that were typed belonged to capsular types 5, 7 and 31. All of 100 strains were sensitive to gentamicin and 98 to neomycin, and all were resistant to penicillin and sulphonamides.
