Effect of reticuloendothelial blockers & stimulators on the evolution of experimental cholesterol atherosclerosis in pigs

Male pigs aged about 5 weeks got a diet with cholesterol 2.5 and olive oil 10%. One group of 4 pigs were given methyl palmitate emulsion by vein and another group glycerol trioleate solution intraperitoneally. The third group (controls) got saline. Injections were given daily for 5 days then 3 times a week for 90 days. Neither methyl palmitate nor glycerol trioleate, a reticuloendothelial system blocker and a stimulator, affected serum cholesterol or phospholipid, but triglyceride was significantly lower than in controls. Methyl palmitate did not affect cholesterol, phospholipid or triglyceride pattern of liver, heart or aorta. Glycerol trioleate increased liver phospholipids and decreased aorta triglycerides. There was a direct relation between atheroma index and serum beta -lipoprotein.
