Proplase of iris in a horse. A case report

The horse had sustained a penetrating corneal wound from wire mesh two days before hospitalisation. After a further two days, it was cased with 2.5 mg Leopental+25 mg suxamethonium and anaesthesia was maintained with halothane. Retrobulbar nerve block was also effected. Removal of the prolapse with scissors caused only minor bleeding and very little aqueous humour escaped. Following corneal suture, the membrana nictitans was sutured to the dorsolateral bulbar conjunctiva, and the eyelids were sutured together. Antibiotic, atropine and prednisolone treatment were given for some days. The corneal sutures were removed after three weeks. Reexamination after ten weeks showed only a narrow white scar in the cornea; light sensitivity and sight appeared normal.
