Much has been written about the management of temporomandibular joint disorders, especially those which involve internal derangement, such as displaced discs, whether they be reducing or non-reducing. Throughout the history of surgical management, a variety of treatments have been proposed, including direct management via open arthrotomy and indirect management utilising surgical procedures such as vertical ramus osteotomy and non-surgical methods such as splint therapy. This paper will review the role of vertical ramus osteotomy in the management of reducing and nonreducing internal joint derangements of the temporomandibular articulation.
