Either serum or plasma could be used in the thyroid function tests, so only one blood sample is required for this and other clinical laboratory tests. Of the five test kits evaluated, two were too involved and time consuming for practical use because of the modifications required, two others designed to evaluate thyroxine displacement and the uptake of iodine-labelled triiodothyronnine on a resin were satisfactory, but the fifth kit was considered particularly useful as it determined both these values in one simple technique. This was the Res-O-Mat ETR Diagnostic Test, devised by Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
