In 50 healthy subjects the effects of isuprel, atropine and prostigmine were studied on sinus node function. After administration of isuprel and atropine the heart rate rose, while after prostigmine it was slower. The effects of isuprel and atropine on the heart rate depended on the age of the subjects, with a greater increase of this rate in younger age groups. The increase of the heart rate after atropine depended on sex, since it was greater in women than men. The effect of prostigmine was independent of the age and sex of the studied subjects. The use of pharmacological tests in the diagnosis of sinus node failure requires taking into consideration of the influence of age and sex on the heart rate as observed in healthy subjects.
