Of 148 urine samples examined, 38 were positive for bacteriurea by the calibrated loop technique and of these 35 were positive by the reagent strip technique. The latter method was less sensitive than the former in detecting bacteriuria in samples containing less than 10 000 bacteria/ml. In cases of gross haematuria, the reagent strip method was unsatisfactory.
