Samples of blubber from 13 harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) were collected in 1971 from sites in California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska and analysed for residues of polychlorinated biphenyls and DDT and its metabolites. The residues of the two types of compounds were considered together and the total combined residues in the samples from the four localities were 380.7-2350, 27.7-109.9, 459.4-1620 and 6.8-27.8 p.p.m., respectively. There was no indication of a loss of residues of total DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls when three samples were analysed again after being kept for two years in frozen storage.
