Scabies. Subungual areas harbor mites

Scabies, caused by Sarcoptes scabiei in an elderly patient in Maryland, that failed to respond to treatment with total-body applications of 1% lindane was shown to be harboured by debris in the subungual areas of the finger nails. A combination of trimming the nails, scrubbing the subungual areas and compressing the fingertips with lindane for 2 days controlled the infestation.
