Guineapigs were given diets devoid of ascorbic acid or with 2 or 86 g/kg diet, with and without fasting, and plasma corticoids, adrenal corticoids and adrenal ascorbic acid were estimated in vitro by a dynamic superfusion technique. Plasma corticoid levels were high in all fasted animals regardless of ascorbic acid intake, supporting the theory that fasting gives rise to stress sufficient to stimulate adrenocorticoid activity. Plasma corticoids were high also in fed animals given large amounts of ascorbic acid; basal adrenocorticoid release in vitro was raised in these guineapigs and could not be elevated further by addition of ACTH. The results imply a functional relation between adrenal ascorbic acid and ACTH-receptor site activity.
