The nutritional status with respect to riboflavin was evaluated in 3 groups each of 80 women, who were respectively non-pregnant, pregnant and lactating mothers aged 15-48 yr of a low socio-economics status. Food and nutrient intake was considered inadequate in all 3 groups. Biochemical analysis of urine samples showed more than half of non-pregnant and pregnant groups to be riboflavin deficient, and of the lactating group 33.8% had 'high' riboflavin levels (>500 mu g/g creatinine), 30.0% had acceptable levels (350-499 mu g), 31.2% had low levels (200-349 mu g) and 5.0% were deficient (<200 mu g. On mean intakes of 0.44, 0.49 and 0.58 mg riboflavin/day by non-pregnant, pregnant and lactating women, the urinary riboflavin excretions were 343, 333 and 428 mu g/g creatinine respectively. The positive correlation between riboflavin intake and excretion for non-pregnant and lactating women was statistically significant (P < 0.05).
