Single venous blood and urine samples from 100 pregnant women attending an antenatal clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe, were analysed for iodine status. Visible goitres were observed in 16% of the women. Serum free triiodothyronine values were less than the mean value for non-pregnant controls in 70% of cases, and mean serum free thyroxine values were significantly greater. The urinary iodine concentration was slightly higher in goitrous than in non-goitrous pregnant women. There was no biochemical evidence of maternal hypothyroidism.
