Excretion of the antibiotics cephradine and epicillin into the milk of 12 lactating women and the amniotic fluid of 48 pregnant women was studied. The lactating women were given a 500-mg capsule of 1 antibiotic every 6 h (total of 9 administrations). Av. concn. of each drug in milk samples obtained immediately after administration of the last dose and 1-6 h thereafter remained essentially constant, about 0.6 mu g/ml for cephradine and 0.15 mu g/ml for epicillin. Also, concn. of antibiotics in milk tended to remain constant for each woman during the sampling period, and did not vary significantly among women immediately after delivery and those who had nursed for up to 14 wk. Ratio of av. antibiotics concn. in serum to that in milk was 4.8 for epicillin and 5.0 for cephradine.
