The clinical relevance of tachyphylaxis to beta 2 agonists

Tachyphylaxis is the decrease in response to a continued stimulus with time. That to p2 agonists can be considered in three categories: extrapulmonary effects, pulmonary non-bronchodilator effects and pulmonary bronchodilator effects. Extrapulmonary tachyphylaxis effects do occur with 132 agonists and are, if anything, beneficial in that they decrease the undesirable side-effects of the drugs. Pulmonary non-bronchodilator tachyphylaxis also exists. The significance of tachyphylaxis to the pulmonary bronchodilator effect of ß-agonists is still debated. Any tachyphylactic effect, however, is small and in clinical terms appears not to be significant. However, these effects need to be evaluated further.
