An epidemiological investigation into an outbreak on a Berkshire farm involving six cows, four of which died, indicated that five of the animals were affected as a result of blood effusion from the initial case. Anthrax organisms were cultured from an area of contaminated ground, approximately 2000 cm2, up to eight months after the initial case died. The cause of the initial infection is uncertain but it might have originated through the dairy herd grazing over the grave of an anthrax case buried more than 30 years previously.
