The efficacy of the Sterne strain non-encapsulated avirulent spore vaccine was evaluated by surveying 73 farms, with an animal population of 4422 cattle, 29 horses and 20 pits, during and after and epidemic of anthrax in Louisiana. Most of the deaths due to anthrax (97%) occurred either before or 1-7 days after vaccination. Although two doses of the vaccine were frequently given, a single dose provided equivalent protection.
