Of 102 cases examined, 82 had peripheral (generalized) progressive retinal atrophy and 20 (mainly Collies) had central atrophy. Of the 82 with peripheral atrophy, 41 were Poodles (mainly miniature Poodles); other affected breeds included Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds and some local breeds-the first report in Swiss dog breeds. The ophthalmoscopic and histological features are described, with 6 colour photographs. The establishment of a breeding register is necessary to prevent the further spread of this serious hereditary disease.
