DDT and dieldrin residues in selected biota from San Antonio Bay, Texas--1972

Some 240 samples of 10 species of selected biota from San Antonio Bay, Texas, were collected and analyzed by electron-capture or gas-liquid chromatography or both for residues of DDT and its metabolites and dieldrin. The most common residue detected was p,p'-DDE, which was the only member of the DDT group found in most samples. Results indicated that the biota sampled contained relatively small amounts of the compounds in question. The highest level detected was 0.106 p.p.m DDE in an oyster. Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) had the greatest incidence of contamination, especially by DDE. Incidence of dieldrin contamination in blue crabs, oysters, and clams was similar. Of the major groups sampled, shrimp showed the lowest incidence of residues.
