Recovery of adenoviruses and slow herpesviruses from horses having respiratory tract infection

Adenoviruses were isolated from 6 Arabian foals with terminal respiratory tract infection, and 'slow' herpesviruses were isolated from 12 foals and 2 adults of Arabian and other breeds with nonfatal respiratory tract infection. Adenovirus and slow herpesvirus inclusions in exfoliated epithelial cells and in inoculated cell cultures were similar in appearance and generally indistinguishable. According to electron microscopic examination, size of virions of adenovirus in inoculated cell cultures was approximately 78 nm.
