Prolactin receptors in mammary carcinoma cells

Specific 125I-prolactin binding activity of crude pellet particles from the 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene-induced mammary carcinoma, which is dependent on prolactin for growth, ranged from 30 to 80% of that of the lactating mammary gland. The R3230AC carcinoma, which is prolactin responsive for milk protein synthesis but not for growth, had a tissue concn. of prolactin receptor activity of approx. 15% of that of lactating mammary gland. The C3HBA carcinoma, a relatively autonomous tumour, had no detectable prolactin receptor activity. Properties of the prolactin binding activities of these carcinomas were identical to those of the prolactin receptor of the mammary alveolar cells of rats and mice.
