Glomerulonephritis is the term that encompasses a group of disease which produces inflammatory changes in the glomerulus.(1) The long term consequence of these diseases is permanent injury to the kidneys leading many times to a chronic kidney damage which may need some form of renal replacement therapy,i.e. : dialysis or kidney transplant. Glomerulonephritis is the third cause of end stage renal disease just behind diabetes mellitus and hypertension(2) so it is important to recognize and treat it accordingly and avoid, if possible the progressive nature of the disorder. Looking at the clinical pattern, age and sex of the patient and serum complement concentration (vide infra) is an acceptable clinical approach.
