Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease regardless of the advancement of the illness. Intervention at early stages of chronic kidney disease is indicated in order to attempt to decrease morbidity and mortality secondary to cardiovascular complications. A review of recent data on traditional risk factors (hypertension, lipids, diabetes mellitus, and left ventricular hypertrophy) as well as nontraditional risk factors (Hyperhomocysteinemia, oxidative stress, inflammation malnutrition, anemia, and hyperparathyroidism) is presented. Early intervention on correction of risk factors correction is needed to decrease cardiac events in patients with chronic kidney disease.
