Alzheimer's Disease is the most common cause of dementia. The benefits of understanding the importance of a comprehensive approach to evaluation and diagnosis of AD will extend to most patients with dementia. The wise use of the combination of risk factors with clinical presentation and symptom progression, and available methods of evaluation and diagnosis, can lead to an accurate diagnosis. Diagnosing dementia in the earliest possible stages becomes essential and is certainly in the hands of the primary physician. Early diagnosis enables both the patient and the family to prepare for the challenging decisions they will confront. Recognizing that the patient's presentation is a direct consequence of a disease provides the ability to respect, preserve dignity, and give value to people suffering from AD for who they were before the illness attacked their life.
