Bone marrow transplantation is a therapeutic tool with multiple potential applications in the treatment of malignant diseases. In Puerto Rico, the first adult transplant program was started in 1998. Sixty eight (68) autologous transplants have been performed between May, 1998 and February, 2004. The history of this treatment modality on the island will be reviewed. Details of the procedure used for hematopoietic progenitor cell collection and the experience with this initial group of patients will be analysed. Future projections of the program will be discussed.
