Puerto Rico lacks surveys indicating the prevalence of smoking among different population groups. Nevertheless, using data on attributable risks associated with specific causes of death yields a first approximation of the impact of smoking on mortality in Puerto Rico. At present, smoking is linked to one of every eight deaths. This is three times the AIDS death toll, and almost six times the number of deaths due to traffic accidents. The impact is particularly significant among men, who represent 67.2 per cent of all smoking-related deaths.
