The high incidence of renal neoplasms in male Wistar rats fed 1, 2 or 3 ppm of purified aflatoxin B1 was thought to result from a cumulative effect of the toxin. Characteristic features of the tumours included lack of orientation of mitochondria and a "brush-border"-like appearance of the malignant epithelial cells. By electron microscopy this effect was seen to be caused by numerous microvilli, without apical orientation, which, although present on all surfaces of the cells, were particularly obvious at their luminal margins.i.
