Blood samples were collected each week until 120 days of age from 21 female calves reared for breeding, and from 22 male fattening calves fed solely on milk and milk substitutes. Foetal haemoglobin concentration declined at the same rate in the two groups until 90 days of age; after this time the decline was slower in the anaemic, iron-deficient calves, one of which showed a temporary increase in foetal haemoglobin at 103 days.
